Landing in Nairobi early this morning, we wind our way through the airport, to get rebooked for a late afternoon flight to Arusha. We spent most of the day in the Kenya Airways Simba lounge, which had everything one could want to drink, mostly traditional foods for lunch, plus cakes and fruit, and some very comfy chairs and sofas.
Finally, a bus to the old terminal, and we walked up the gangway onto a small plane (held about 60 people), for the 45-minute flight to Kilimanjaro.
Barney is in the left window seat, so he gets some great views of Mt. Kilimanjaro. At last we land in Kilimanjaro, meet our escort from Leopard Tours, and go through customs, get visas, luggage, and load up a small bus to the hotel in Arusha.
Leaving the airport, we have a view of Mt. Meru on the left at sunset, and Kilimanjaro to the right far in the distance. Lots of people are along the highway, and we see loaded donkeys amid the motorbikes. Driving on the British side of the road is always a bit disconcerting at first, so glad not to be driving here, especially being so jet lagged.
We head out the “Great Road,” a 2-lane highway with no lights, which runs all the way from Cape Town, South Africa, to Cairo, Egypt. We pass a number of small one-story buildings, which seem to be combination homes and general stores packed with people, then eventually we get to an open area as the sun set.
Tonight we stay in a hotel in Arusha (showers at last!), then we’re up early for the flight on a small plane to the Serengeti!
